Welcome to MikalBJJ’s most recent addition, “Nutrition Corner”!  Here we will be providing some information on what I consider to be important topics regarding nutritional health, what that means in regards to sports-more specifically Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/MMA-performance, making weight, and eating towards the better you that you wish to see and be.  As usual comments, questions, ideas, and counter-points are not only appreciated but encouraged.

For our first post I wanted to touch on the subject of program prep, one of the most underrated and misunderstood portions of any diet adjustment program, the DETOX.  DETOX, short for detoxification, is the body’s natural, ongoing process of neutralizing or eliminating toxins from the body. Toxins are anything that can potentially harm body tissue, including waste products that result from normal cell activity, such as ammonia, lactic acid and homocysteine, and human-made toxins that we are exposed to in our environment, food, and water. The liver, intestines, kidneys, lungs, skin, blood and lymphatic systems work together to ensure that toxins are transformed chemically to less harmful compounds and excreted from the body.

Intense toxic waste levels are usually caused by poor diet, stress, overeating, less-than active lifestyle, illness, and poor health habits in general.  Accumulation of toxins in the body leads to toxemia which occurs when your digestive tract has become incapable of breaking down, digesting food normally, nutrients, minerals, and any other valuable nutrition ingested! When the digestive system is impaired in this way, food does not move efficiently through the digestive tract. Rather than being digested normally, food will ROT and create toxic by-products. This condition is known as intestinal toxemia or toxic colon syndrome.  Many Americans have some form of this disorder.  If you want to make the most of your new diet program it is best to DETOX your system so that you can start “fresh”-pun intended- and clear your system of waste.  This prepares you to ABSORB the “clean” nutrition you are about to start sending your body.

There are multiple ways to acheive the smart goal of DETOXING.  In my search for the perfect detox I have found quite a few that fulfill the desired requirements for success, but have by no means tried or researched them all.  Here are two of my favorite:


  • Psyllium Husk Detox is an awesome way to cleanse/DETOX your intestinal system and in my humble opinion should be used intermittently in your week to week lifestyle.  This DETOX helps to cleanse all wasted collected over time out of your intestines.  Its started working for me the first day and required the least ongoing maintenance.
  • Master Cleanse is another awesome system that does an intense and thorough full body cleanse.  But as the saying goes, “you get what you pay for”.  In this case you definately pay about 1-2 weeks of intense liquid diet cleanse.  But by the end of it you will feel AWESOME!
  • TrueStar Basics Detox( is an awesome short term use product designed to help PREPARE the body for a diet and weight loss regimen. I use it every time and I have CUT quite a bit of weight(20-30lbs) for competition. If you want to remove TOXINS from your body, this is an excellent choice to jump start ANY DIET.

    I am detoxing right now. Everything you wrote I just found out about at a nutrionalist office recently. I definitely have these issues.
