About Mikal Abdullah

Mikal Abdullah NOGI Champion

As you may have guessed my name is Mikal Abdullah and I am a BJJ (Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu) competitor, practitioner, teacher, blogger, and professional MMA(Mixed Martial Arts) fighter.  My love for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, coupled with a thirst for knowledge and sharing is what really inspired me to start this blog. Since then its has evolved into much more than that.  I have been blessed to have some awesome and dedicated friends in the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community contribute and add their own perspectives and spirit to this blog as well.  I hope you enjoy our journey and appreciate the experiences that we share!

After being honorably discharged from the U.S. Army and returning to the U.S. I was in search of something physically/mentally stimulating and spiritually fulfilling.  While working security-bouncing- at a nightclub with a friend I was invited to try out something called submission wrestling.  I was immediately hooked and began training out of his garage and soaking up as much knowledge as I could.  Shortly after I began competing in grappling tournaments with a modicum of success.  This led to me being offered my first pro fight. But that is another story…  Around this time I had met an accomplished Black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and through some twist of fate ended up travelling the world-or part anyway ;) - training, growing, meeting people and experiencing different perspectives (on life and BJJ).  But as sometimes happens, in order to grow you may have to put down roots for a time, and that is just what I did in Austin, TX.

I am currently the Head Coach/Founder of Aces Jiu Jitsu Club at the Domain in beautiful Austin, TX; where I train all levels from beginner to professional fighters using the techniques and principles that I’ve learned and applied through my on-going journey towards self-discovery by way of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

As is most practitioners’ goal, I dreamt of beginning my journey for the coveted black belt.  But I have along the way developed a taste for sharing/teaching the techniques, principles, and translations of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu into everyday life; an Evangelist for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu if you will ;) .  It is through this love for sharing that my life goals evolved to encompass the goal of founding Aces Jiu Jitsu Club and sharing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with as many people as possible!  Please join me on my journey and enjoy MikalBJJ!!!
